Hydrellia formosa
A tiny shore fly in the Freshwater Lake and Lakeshore whose larvae mine the leaves of tapegrass (Vallisneria); Hydrellia formosa is the principal leaf-mining herbivore on eelgrass beds in Florida freshwater systems, creating visible serpentine mines in tapegrass leaves.
Shore Fly was noted on tapegrass in the lake biome in the original species_description; no date or population count was recorded. No dedicated observation records have been found beyond this note. Whether Shore Fly is currently present and actively mining Vallisneria leaves in the Freshwater Lake is unresolved.
Primary consumer. Larvae mine the leaves of Vallisneria americana (tapegrass) in the Freshwater Lake, feeding on leaf tissue between the epidermis layers and creating characteristic serpentine mines visible on the leaf surface. This is the main insect herbivore pathway on Vallisneria in the Freshwater Lake. Adults feed on algae and biofilm at the water margin. No population count or mining density observation has been recorded in miniBIOTA.
Hydrellia formosa is adapted to the warm subtropical conditions of Florida freshwater systems. Requires standing or slow-moving fresh water with a Vallisneria bed for larval development. Adults tolerate the humid lakeside microclimate. Multiple generations per year are possible under Florida conditions. Specific pH and temperature tolerances are not well-documented.
Females lay eggs on the surface of Vallisneria leaf blades. Larvae hatch and bore into the leaf, mining between the epidermis layers. Mines widen as the larva grows and are visible as pale or brownish serpentine tracks on the leaf surface. Pupation occurs on or within the leaf. Adults emerge and mate near the water surface. Multiple generations per year are likely under Florida subtropical conditions.
